The art of patience.

This is as much a story about technology as it is about design.

When I got to PayPal in 2008, I wanted to redesign the site (obviously), however, one huge obstacle was in my way. The entire site was built on C++. No, I'm not joking.

The display layer was, tragically, fused to the business logic. So, I had to be patient, and make step changes to the areas of the site I could touch.

eBay was first to invest in refactoring, but eventually, we got our chance.

Along the way, I became a true expert in

e-com optimization, checkout, Point-of-Sale technology, and risk models. Who knew?

So many talented engineers, designers, researchers, and more, in every region, worked on redesigns during my 5-year tenure. I can't possibly list them all here.

The detailed love story between PayPal code and PayPal design
is best told in person. But for now...here are some highlights.
